| Today’s buyers long for nostalgia, for front porches overlooking tree-lined streets and sidewalks that lead to nearby shops, schools, eateries and community and cultural gathering places. But they also want modern conveniences, and homes that suit their particular lifestyle needs. The New Urban Challenge, produced by BUILDER and HOME magazines, is a collection of three modestly sized and appropriately scaled single-family detached homes that redefine American housing in response to growing consumer interest for walkable, mixed-use neighborhoods and a return to urban living. Under construction in Baldwin Park, a 1,100-acre in-city redevelopment project in Orlando, FL., the New Urban Challenge will debut at the 2005 International Builders’ Show in January as a model solution for builders, architects and land planners to follow as they respond to the complex demands of new urbanism. Click on one of the three homes to get more information about how each one meets the New Urban Challenge, as well as profiles of its design team and its floor plans. Also, be sure to check out sections regarding the project’s Partners, including builder David Weekley Homes and the trio of renowned residential architects challenged to design homes that showcase the elements of today’s urban desires. See the Sponsors section for a list of companies that generously donated the latest in building products to the New Urban Challenge. |
